In 2015 I was serving as a church deacon, sometimes helping folks navigate financial struggles, occasionally I’d make a referral to Love… then, in an unforeseeable whirlwind my marriage fractured and I became a single-mom of 2 living on <50% of our previous household income. I know I needed to refer myself to Love. I honestly entered the program with some shame or embarrassment, I was afraid of judgment (I’d wear a ballcap to try to blend-in) but within a month I felt at-ease, there was zero judgment, the staff and volunteers were simply amazing.
I dove into the budget program, made serious budget adjustments, relearned spending habits, and humbly accepted gas/grocery assistance from LYN; within 1 year I was solid in my new budget and graduated the program. But, not before I had the honor of meeting Sondra, my mentor (now called peer support). Sondra was a pure gift in my life, she showed up every Thursday night and we’d talk about life, she’d listen, she’d pray, she’d support and show kindness. There wasn’t a single thing I couldn’t talk about with Sondra, and I came to eagerly look forward to Thursdays (no ballcaps) because I knew Sondra would be there. Sondra would talk about her beloved grandchildren and about the joys in her life, she’d remind me that God is always in the midst of our stories. I thank God for Love Your Neighbor and for Sondra, both have had a profound and wonderful impact in my life.
After graduating from the program I’ve gone on to volunteer with LYN in different capacities, from teaching classes, sorting food donations, serving as a peer support, and being on the board of directors. I praise God for the work LYN is doing, I pray for ongoing impact, and I pray that all who come through the doors will feel dignity and the life-changing love of Christ.
