A Letter of Hope

“We came to this program when we were in a hard season of life. I heard about Love your Neighbor through my good friend who was in the program and encouraged me to call. I knew this time around I needed to take steps to find different resources to help us financially as my husband had been struggling with his mental health for a while. My husband lost his job and I decided he should not quickly look for another job, but to take time to take care of himself at a pace that would benefit his mental health.

I’m so thankful for all the people who are a part of this program that we have seen each week. Especially the volunteers who came in and provided good information and who walked alongside us in our hard journey.

You have all been so kind and understanding towards us.

I think my favorite class was the financial literacy class. I learned so much. Our old habits went like this- the more money you made the more money you spent.  Our new habits are- you make a planned budget and stick with it best you can, pay off debt and start saving a little each week.

Since my husband was able to get a new job recently, we just paid off 2 credit card bills, that’s 2 less bills a month now!

For me, coming each week was something I looked forward to. It was a blessing to be surrounded by all of you- to know we weren’t alone in our struggles. I have gained a deeper sense of empathy and compassion when hearing some of the people in my group open up and share their struggles, especially their journeys with mental health. It helps me understand my husband a little more.

Personally, I have a soft spot in my heart for those people in my group who struggle with depression because I have had to watch my husband struggle with it and it is so hard, and I can only imagine how hard it is for them too. I pray and think of those people often and encourage them to keep coming each week to find good support and make healthy connections with people who care about them and who can walk alongside them in their journey as they continue to make progress.

I am looking forward to continuing the class that I’m in as I enjoy this community. I’m trying to figure out if God has something more for me here. I plan on taking one week at a time.

Thanks again for doing the job that you do! What a blessing to you I’m sure walking alongside some of these people and the amazing amount of growth in just a year.

P.S. This experience has been humbling and exciting for us. Thanks to what we have learned in the program we are moving quicker than ever in eliminating our frivolous debt. Your work has been a huge blessing to us and from what I have seen a huge blessing to others as well. We can not thank you enough. Please keep doing what you’re doing as I am sure it will be a blessing to many in the future.”

It’s quite incredible that all of this happens almost every day, and every week, by diligent volunteers who embody our diligence core value.

Not only is there a large variety of “things to do,” but also a deep investment by those who say yes to volunteering. Most volunteers serve weekly, some even daily, spending hundreds of hours donating the gift many of us hold most tightly – the gift of time.

In 2023 alone, 420 volunteers invested 49,120 hours – a value of $1.5 million!

Our core mission is to love, serve and connect with dignity as we follow Jesus Christ closely, watching how he transforms lives – and we often highlight the transformation happening through our Life Skills Program.

What we often forget to highlight is that God is also transforming lives through volunteerism, giving community members purpose, friendship, creativity, and belonging. Here at Love, we believe everyone has something to offer.

If you are a volunteer, at Love Your Neighbor or elsewhere, thank you for this priceless gift!
