Sometimes, the best matches are the ones you least expect.

A participant had just completed their financial literacy class when he met his new peer support for the very first time. It was a quick introduction, meant to get them familiar with one another before their official sessions began the following week.

The program leader was very unsure how the match would work. They were from different generations, cultures, and life experiences. One spoke Spanish as a first language, the other English. Their backgrounds could not have been more different. But that “hello” quickly turned into a full peer support session. What was meant to be a brief chat turned into a deep dive, with practical steps, homework, and a lot of relationship building.

Over the next few weeks, the participant not only followed every piece of advice, he flourished. Facing the expiration of his work permit and the uncertainty that came with it, he felt panic and anxiety. He sat down with his peer support and they came up with a plan: pick up overtime at work, pay off debts, and build a savings buffer. Instead of losing hope, the participant felt grounded, hopeful, and excited.

After hard work, it succeeded. He paid off his debt,  started an emergency fund, and in an unexpected turn of events, his work permit was renewed, giving him another year of stability.

What started as a moment of crisis became a story of growth and hope. The encouragement and community he received during this journey changed everything. The peer support regularly tells us, “he’s doing amazing.” And you can see it in the participant. His confidence, pride, and his transformation.

Even with an age, language, and cultural barrier, a deep connection was formed.
