How did you get connected with Love’s Life Skills Program?

We were struggling financially and had heard of Love through our church and through shopping at the resale stores.

What did you appreciate about the program?

We were met the first day with dignity. We were not given a hand-out, in fact when I left the first day, I still had overwhelming bills, but I had a plan and huge hope given to me by my Life Skills Program Leader and that made a huge difference. Also, we were supported each step along the way with caring people.

Did anything about Life Skills surprise you?

It was hard! Not in a bad way, but we had to do the work to see the benefits, which for us was paying off $11,000 in debt in a year and a half!

What classes made an impact and why?

The Bible Study was wonderful as we were in a group with many other participants and a few volunteers and we all came from different backgrounds and had great discussions about the Bible. Also, learning the steps in the financial literacy class were helpful and I still use many of the tips and techniques.

What resources made the biggest impact and why?

For me it was the resource of time that the volunteers gave. Each week we were greeted and supported by many warm faces and hearts who really cared about our success financially, mentally and spiritually.

Also, the Back to School program and the Christmas program was so amazing to be able to receive new items for my children in a dignified way where we could still shop.

What did you think about your peer support?

Our peer support really connected with my husband and I. He shared his life experiences and supported us through our choices, good and bad, as we worked for financial security.

What goals did you have/achieve while in Life Skills?

We wanted to get back on top of our finances. That was the main goal for starting.

How is life different from going through Life Skills?

Love Your Neighbor is a significant part of our lives. We gained a love for the ministry that continues on as I am employed here now and my children volunteer here as well!

What would you want to tell someone struggling / in survival mode?

Come! It is so hard to drive here and admit you need help. But you are not alone! We are here to help, and to help in such a beautiful, grace-filled, dignified way that your life will be changed! It will take time, but things can get better, and Love Your Neighbor can help if you are ready!

We’ll be sharing 40 stories of transformation leading up to our 40th Celebration Block Party on September 24th. Please join us!
